Is Metro (TSE: MRU) Excessive Debt a Concern for Invester?

David Iben's assertion about volatility and the permanent loss of capital underscores the importance of assessing a company's debt utilization, as excessive debt can pose significant risks to shareholders. Metro Inc. (TSE: MRU), like many other businesses, employs debt as a financial tool. However, the key question remains: is Metro's debt a cause for concern among shareholders?

Understanding the Risks of Debt

Debt can serve as a valuable instrument for businesses, particularly those with capital-intensive operations. However, it becomes problematic when a company struggles to meet its debt obligations, leading to potential shareholder losses. Additionally, companies may resort to issuing shares at discounted prices to alleviate financial pressures, resulting in dilution of shareholder value.

Quantifying Metro's Debt Burden

As of December 2023, Metro carries a total debt of CA$2.87 billion, showing a slight increase from the previous year. While net debt remains relatively stable due to limited cash reserves, the company's balance sheet reveals significant liabilities, including CA$2.29 billion due within a year and CA$4.96 billion due thereafter.

Assessing Balance Sheet Strength

Metro's balance sheet portrays a mixed picture, with liabilities outweighing liquid assets by CA$6.29 billion. However, the company's substantial market capitalization of CA$16.6 billion suggests the potential to raise additional capital if necessary. Despite this, careful scrutiny is warranted to evaluate Metro's ability to manage its debt obligations without resorting to shareholder dilution. In the realm of TSX consumer shares, Metro's financial standing merits a closer examination, especially concerning its capacity to navigate debt burdens while maintaining shareholder value.

Debt in Relation to Earnings Power

A critical metric for evaluating debt sustainability is the net debt-to-EBITDA ratio, which stands at a moderate 1.6 for Metro Inc. Additionally, the company's robust EBIT coverage of its interest expenses by a factor of 11.0 indicates a comfortable debt load. Moreover, Metro's recent 7.0% increase in EBIT over twelve months alleviates concerns about debt repayment.

Cash Flow Dynamics and Debt Repayment Capacity

Free cash flow generation is essential for servicing debt obligations, and Metro demonstrates commendable performance in this regard. Over the past three years, the company has produced sturdy free cash flow equivalent to 67% of its EBIT, positioning it favorably to pay down debt as needed.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Metro Inc.'s prudent debt management practices, coupled with its strong financial performance and cash flow dynamics, suggest that the company can comfortably handle its debt obligations. While debt remains a factor to monitor closely, Metro's robust balance sheet and earnings outlook instill confidence in its ability to navigate financial challenges effectively. As investors, prioritizing the preservation of capital while assessing risk and return remains paramount when evaluating Metro Inc.'s investment potential.
