Barrick's Year-End Earnings Soar to US$1.47 Billion with Fourth Quarter Boost

Barrick Gold (TSX: ABX) has reported strong financial results driven by rising gold price and a robust fourth quarter. The company's adjusted net earnings reached $1.47 billion, compared to $1.33 billion in 2002, leading to a quarterly dividend declaration of $0.10 per share.

Performance Overview

Despite facing challenges in the first half of the year, Barrick Gold accelerated its pace in the latter half. However, gold production slightly fell short of annual guidance as indicated in the third-quarter results. In 2023, the company produced 4.05 million oz. of gold, realizing a price of $1,948 per oz., compared to 4.14 million oz. at a price of $1,795 per oz. in 2022. All-in sustaining costs per ounce produced were $1,335, up from $1,222 per oz. in the previous year.

Additionally, copper production for 2023 totaled 420 million lb. at a realized price of $3.85, slightly lower than the 440 million lb. produced in 2022 at the same price. All-in sustaining costs in 2023 increased slightly to $3.21 per lb. from $3.18 per lb. in 2022.

Financial Highlights

Strategic Initiatives and Outlook

Mark Bristow, President and CEO of Barrick Gold, highlighted the company's focus on dealing with challenges while progressing long-term strategic plans. Barrick sustained its industry-leading organic growth outlook, projecting a 30% increase in gold equivalent production by the end of the decade.

To further enhance shareholder value, Barrick initiated a share buyback program, aiming to repurchase up to $1 billion of its outstanding common shares over the next 12 months at prevailing market prices.
